Joseph Ayo Babalola (1904–1959): A Life Dedicated to God's Work

Joseph Ayo Babalola (1904–1959) was one of Africa's greatest revivalists and the first General Evangelist of the Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Nigeria. Through his ministry, God brought one of the most remarkable revival movements in African church history, leading countless people to faith in Jesus Christ.

Born in Odo-Owa, Kwara State, Nigeria, Babalola worked as a road construction employee before receiving a divine call into full-time ministry. Though he had little formal education, he was known for his deep devotion to prayer, holiness, and complete dependence on the Holy Spirit.

In 1930, a powerful revival broke out through his ministry in Òkè Òyì (Oke Ooye), Ilesa, spreading rapidly across southwestern Nigeria and beyond. Thousands gathered to hear the Gospel, and many testified to salvation, healing, deliverance, and renewed commitment to Christ.

His ministry focused on:

• Preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

• Calling people to repentance and salvation.

• Leading fervent prayer and intercession.

• Encouraging holiness and obedience to God's Word.

• Believing God for healing and deliverance.

Babalola was widely known as a man of prayer. He often withdrew to mountains and secluded places to seek God's presence before ministering. His life reflected humility, faith, and unwavering commitment to God's calling.

One of the defining characteristics of his ministry was his emphasis on repentance and holy living. He believed that genuine revival begins when people turn wholeheartedly to God and live in obedience to His Word.

His life echoed the promise of 2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV):

"If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land."

Joseph Ayo Babalola also lived out the Great Commission in Matthew 28:19–20, dedicating his life to making disciples and proclaiming the Gospel throughout Nigeria.

Today, his legacy continues through the Christ Apostolic Church and countless believers whose lives were transformed by the revival God brought through his ministry. He remains an enduring example of prayer, holiness, faith, and complete surrender to the will of God.
